Elite Women's Field Events Athletes During The Winter Period Of Anemia And Iron Store

Objective:The research took 11 Chinese female field athletes ( 3 for weight throw , 4 for javelin, 4 for pole jump ) trained for Beijing 2008 Olympic Games as the subjects, explored their anemia probability and rules of iron stock change during winter training, and found the reason of anemia and the lack of iron, in order to make adjustment and help the athlete fulfill the winter training plan.Methods:The research took follow-up observation during the whole winter training season (from Dec.2004 to Feb.2005). Observing and recording athlete's training status, catamenia and eating habit, we tested athletes'Hemoglobin (Hb), erythrocyte parameter, Serum ferritin (SF) and testosterone.Intervention:Ingestion of iron tablet each morning for 60 days.Results:(1) The probability of anemia happened in female t field athletes during winter training reach 36.7%(Hb<120g/L),and there were 75% of athlete with anemia whose SF was below 40ng/ml.(2)We investigated catamenia status of these female athletes and found that, except for one weight thrower, others 'catamenia quantity and cycle were normal.(3)We investigated 11 athletes'eating habit, and found that vegetarian and those who control their weight intentionally have high probability of anemia and the lack of iron(60%),and those who were not vegetarian and did not control weight were normal.(4) Hb lowered to a low level at the fifth week( compared with basic value before winter training, P<0.05),and became normal at the sixth week until the end of training. The athletes'SF decreased at the fourth week(compared with the basic value before winter training, P<0.05)。The research found that the pole jumper's SF before and after winter training were 49.7±7.9ng/ml ,and were lower than two other sport group(P<0.05)。(5)analyzing of correlation between the erythrocyte parameter and SF of all athletes, we found that SF are not correlated prominently with Hb, but with MCV/RDW. But analyzing correlation between the erythrocyte parameter and SF of athletes whose SF is below 60ng/ml, we found that SF was not correlated prominently with MCV/RDW, but with Hb.(6)supplementing iron to the athlete with anemia that is mainly caused by the lack of iron two month, we found that the SF increased by 217% .Conclusion:(1)The probability of anemia was high in female athlete in Chinese national team, and the anemia was mainly caused by the lack of iron.(2)The decrease of athlete's iron stock caused by training is one of the factors that affect the athlete's iron stock , but the blood lose caused by catamenia and dieting is the factor that cannot be neglected.(3)It is possible for the MCV/RDW to be the prognostic indices for the forepart decrease of iron stock. If MCV/RDW decreases greatly, we can test SF to confirm the lack of iron. .
