We want to investigate the effects of different nutrition supplements on some iron metabolism parameters of exercise-induced anemic rats to give some evidences on preventing and treating exercise-induced anemia. We set up a model according to Zhao Jie-xiu's method of man-made sports anemia model for rats.In the first 5 weeks we trained the rats in GXT treadmill exercise to build sports anemia model for rats.Then,at the end of the fifth week,24 rats of the experimental group were divided into 3 sub-groups:experimental group with no intervention(8,E), experimental group with TCM supplement(8,ET) and the experimental group with Iron supplement(8,EI).We trained the rats in another model of GXT exercise for the following 4 weeks.24 hours after the last training episode,all rats were anaesthetised and killed.All serum samples were picked up from abdominal artery and kept in -20 Celsius degrees refrigerator.At the end of the fifth week,the average RBC,Hb,Hct of rats in the experimental group is significantly lower than that of the Control group (P<0.01).After 4 weeks' nutrition intervention,rats in E group are still suffering from anemia(P<0.01).RBC,Hb and Hct of rats in ET and EI group is nearly in the same level as that of Control group(P>0.05). 2) There is no significant difference in SI,TIBC and TS in all groups (P>0.05).However,SI and TS of EI and ET have a trend to improve and TIBC of EI and ET is likely to decrease.3) There is also no significant difference in TfR-mRNA in all groups(P>0.05).But the parameter of E group is 4%higher than that of Control group.We can conclude that:1) we can successfully build man-made sports anemia model for rats by GXT treadmill exercise;2) Iron metabolism disorder may contribute to sports anemia and nutrition supplement can to some degree improve iron metabolism conditions in rats;3) Although there is no significant difference in TfR gene expression in bone marrow in all groups,there is a trend that the TfR gene expression increases to some extent,we may conclude that the normal hematopoietic function is inhibited by iron metabolism disorder in the bone marrow.After nutrition supplements,TfR gene expression of EI and ET is nearly in the same level as Control group and it tells that the iron metabolism in the bone marrow improves.
