Sports anemia is an important issue attracting the attention of the sports medicine circle for it is a major factor restricting the improvement of sports performance. The aim of the experiment is to investigate the effect of living high—training low (HiLo) on red blood cell related parameters and Erythropoietin (EPO) in order to supply a effective method in the prevention and treatment of sports anemia. The subjects were fourteen female sports anemia coming from a middle-distance race team of a sport school in Beijing. According to the results of Hb and SF(Hb<120g/l,SF<40μg/l),the subjects were randomly divided into HiLo group(n=6)and control group (n=8).The HiLo group spent 11h per night for 25 nights in a room simulating an attitude of 2500m in normobaric hypoxia(O2 15.3%; space 30m3;humidity 60%; temperature 22℃), while the control group lived in the normal condition. In order to add the stimulation of hypoxia, HiLo group rid a bicycle ergometer three times with 70%VO2max in hypoxia, while control group did in the normal condition with 80%VO2max. The time is all 20 minutes. The hemoglobin concentration, Red blood cell counts, hematocrit reticulocyte and serum EPO were measured for several times. Results: Reticulocyte in HiLo group became significantly higher from the 9th day to the end. Red blood cell counts in HiLo group were higher on the 9th day than that before training and higher on the 25th day. The higher rate was 6.39% and 8.06% respectively (p<0.05). The higher rate of hematocrit in HiLo group was 5.73% on the 25th day, but control group was lower on the 2nd day and the 16th day than that before text. After training, the change of serum EPO represented a curved line,it became higher on the 2nd day and the 16th day, lower on the 9th day and the end. But control group showed a declining trend. Conclusion: Sports anemia can be improved by hypoxia in HiLo.
