As the backbone of the political thought education, college assistants are the organizers and educators engaged in college students'political thought at the basic level. They play an important role in college political thought education. However, for a long time, college assistants have not been attached importance to and cultivated as the other professional teachers; also they have not become administrative personnel, even existed in professional form. In the background of implementing scientific outlook of development and building a harmonious socialist society advanced by the 17th NCCPC, constructing professional college assistants not only meets the needs of the higher education reform and development, but also can deal with some special problems the college students administration faced with.In research materials available about constructing China college assistants, most emphasize on summarizing the experience and methods of the assistants'job and concrete measures taken in cultivating assistants themselves and construction of assistant contingents. They lack for social research of building assistant contingents and can't analyze the deep problems. Up to date, none researches the professionalism of assistant contingents in system and in perspective of system pattern.Starting from the prospecting, the paper divides the college assistant development course into four stages: established phase, restored and development phase, enforcement phase and perfection phase. Also it analyzes the measures taken in constructing assistant contingents and features in each phase, summarizes the development course. For example, college assistant construction develops with times and is influenced by politics, economy and cultures at home and abroad; the connotations increasingly enrich and replenish; the status and payment of college assistants gets more promotion; and with the development of society and higher education, college assistants realize three changes in status, job contents and administration.Based on the inquiry survey, the paper analyzes the effects in quantity and quality and explores the existed problems. The paper puts forward the feasibility of and defines the connotation of constructing professional assistant contingents.On the basis of social division of labor theory and profession classification theory, drawing on the experience of other countries in student administrators'professionalism, the paper poses four principles of professionalism of college assistant contingents: connecting people, overall planning, developing with times and progress step by step. The paper puts forward measures taken in the professionalism of college assistant contingents in perspective of thinking, organization construction and administrative system building. Firstly, we should realize the importance and urgency of the assistant contingent professionalism, thus achieving political and professional, comprehensive and special, transition and long-term. Secondly, enforce the organization construction in following two aspects: one is inner college organization construction which requires enforce organization management and coordinate inner administrative organization relations; the other is otter organization construction which demands create self-discipline professional organization of college assistants and implementing three level self-discipline professional organization(China association of college assistants, the league of district college assistants and the group of inner college assistants). Thirdly, in system building, we should push forward the professional credentials system of college assistants and issues working rules, professional regulations, qualification standard and skill identified standard. Also we need establish and perfect the rank system and personnel agent system of college assistants, formulate the right-interests defending system for safeguarding assistants'economic and promotion rights, so as to develop their realization of protecting themselves. And we should perfect professional training system including before and after work.
