"Algorithm and programming", as the core of the information technology, was one of the major teaching tasks in the beginning stage of computer education in middle school in China. With the gradual development of computer education in middle school and the incessant progress of computer science, there appears the argument over the necessity of teaching Algorithm and programming in middle school. Focusing on this argument, this thesis probes into the research in the application of Algorithm and programming in middle school teaching, and concludes the values. In detail, the research has accomplished the following tasks:Firstly, a diachronic development of teaching Algorithm and programming in middle school is surveyed. This thesis, with the boundary of curriculum reform, divides its history of teaching into two stages, analyzing the values of the teaching of Algorithm and programming.Secondly, the thesis investigates the selective course of Algorithm and programming in the information technology course in high school after the curriculum reform and the status quo of the teaching of Algorithm preliminaries in high school mathematics courses in addition to an analysis of the feasibility and necessity of teaching Algorithm and programming in junior middle school.Based on the investigation and research, this thesis then divides the teaching of Algorithm and programming in middle school into junior and senior stages. The junior stage deals with the teaching design of extra-curriculum classes of Touch the Soul of Computer; while the senior concentrates on the design of Algorithm Preliminaries and Application of Scilab on the basis of mathematics and information technology courses.Thirdly, the application and practice of the design is carried on in the Junior Middle School affiliated to Shanghai Commercial and Industrial Foreign Languages College and the High School affiliated to Shanghai Normal University. In addition, the practice is evaluated and the values of teaching Algorithm and programming in middle school are explored;Lastly, directions for future researches are framed based on the reflection of the thesis.
