The instrumental value of English, the most widely and frequently used language, has been obvious in the era of globalization. It is the best of times and worst of times for us Chinese people. We must develop a large number of international talents who have global outlook and concept, the spirit of cooperation and the capability of communication in order to pursue the fast and sound development and play a more important role in the world affairs and even the advancement of human society. Under these circumstances, English teaching becomes more important. It has been put in the prominent position in the elemental education in China to keep up with the trend. The popularization of English teaching from the primary school helps children seize the best opportunity to learn language and set up a firm foundation for the study in the future. However, some problems behind the vigorous English study can not be neglected, especially the division of students' grades. The thesis makes a research on this problem of the school students in the Xiqing district, which is located between cities and villages, through the way of literature review, questionnaires, observation and talks and put forward the focused suggestion to prevent the division in terms of its particularity.The thesis consists of five parts. In the first part, the introduction presents the purpose of writing, collects and sorts the research results, states the study significance and methods and defines the related core concepts. In the second part, it offers the statistic and analysis of the pupils in three primary schools in Xiqing and describes the current situation of the division. In the third part, the author makes use of pedagogy, psychology and sociology to analyze the division causes of pupils' English grades in the Xiqing district from four aspects: student, teacher, family background and class on the basis of talks, observation and surveys. In the fourth part, the suggestion to prevent the division is provided based on the above analysis and research from both macro- and micro- stages (education administration department and school). School education is stressed in particular. In the last part, the thesis sums up the research results, explores and discusses the possible problems and points out the direction of the further study.
