The construction in English coursebooks has undergone great of changes in English teaching in recent years. The coursebooks are the core of curriculum, and the teachers need to fully grasp the content and form. Meanwhile, teachers also need to know students'learning needs, thus making coursebooks guide and serve teaching much better. In 2001, the Ministry of Education issued The English Curriculum Standard for Senior High Students (Draft) (short for The English Curriculum Standard) and mentioned "teachers should timely carry out a conclusion and analysis when coursebooks have been used for a period of time", including "the situation of teachers and students'satisfaction with coursebooks".Thus, in the background of English teaching reform, how the coursebooks serve for teaching and what reflections of teachers and students are in using the coursebooks are the key points in this paper. As the basis, this thesis mainly starts from the following two aspects:On the one hand, to choose a suitable set of coursebooks is so important that it can affect students'English study directly or indirectly. Coursebooks are important in helping to fulfill teaching objectives. However, coursebooks should serve teaching but not make teachers and students to be coursebooks'slaves. The paper talks about the functions and use condition of coursebooks by means of an investigation of teachers and students in Yu Hong Middle School in Tianjin. On the other hand, though the choice of coursebooks is important, the attitudes of learners cannot be ignored. To know learner needs is helpful to improve teaching quality and students'future development. So teachers must take the students'learning needs into consideration.Finally, the author brings forward on how to develop teaching much better with related theories and previous explorations; a survey of teachers and students and personal experience in Yu Hong Middle School in Tianjin. Thus, teachers should study The English Curriculum Standard and coursebooks carefully in theory; and arouse learners'interest, urge their autonomous learning in practice. Meanwhile, teachers should play fully their role and make students feel more interested and confident in English learning.
