Originating from Korean peninsula,Tae Kwon do as a kind of sports item has been gradually popularized among the whole world. As a result of forty years' development, the independent international organization and standard game has taken shape. In 1973,International Tae Kwon do Association was set up,from that on,in the past 30 years,it has advanced strikingly and evoked Tae Kwon do craze worldwide. In 2000,Tae Kwon do was placed in the list of formal sports item in Olympics.Combining this news with the vigorous development among the international scope,Chinese sports community has realized that it is important and necessary to carry out Tae Kwon do training. In particular, when Chinese sportsman Chenzhong was rewarded championship in Sydney Olympic Games, many Tae Kwon do associations and clubs appeared all over the country which gained great popularity among the enthusiasts.Mean while it was introduced into college where the students warmly welcomed it.Setting up Tae Kwon do course in colleges enriches the contents of Physical Education, broadens students' sports knowledge, activates their enthusiasm,as well as playing a positive role in promoting students' psychological quality, strong willpower and personal accomplishment. Aiming at a comprehensive understanding, this paper conducts investigations and analysis on the present situation of Tae Kwon do in Shandong colleges teaching.Only through this way can we further identify the teaching goal and task, regulate teaching contents, improve testing approach and emphasize the function of Tae Kwon do in the quality education. As a result, that will provide valuable data for the launching of Shandong Tae Kwon do.This paper applies documentary, investigation and statistical approach. Treating about 20 colleges(except the sports school) as the object of investigation, the paper has concluded as follows:1.Tae Kwon do is easy to learn and it does well to physical health, self-defense and personal accomplishment. That is why it has been favored and welcomed by students.2.Nowadays the percentage of the beginning courses is so low as to be only 20%in Shandong colleges. This phenomenon deserves a special attention and measures should be taken to promote that percentage. For example, the leaders concerned are supposed to attach importance to this subject and make more efforts to construct ground.3.The general structure of professional titles requires to be readjusted in Shandong province.A majority of instructors are young with pretty low titles. There appear a lack of professional instructors with the truth that more than half of the instructors graduate from some other majors.Firstly they need the further study of the technical knowledge of Tae Kwon do.The about mentioned are the factors that prevent Tae Kwon do from developing rapidly in colleges.4.In colleges the time limit of Tae Kwon do course is set in one semester, which is disadvantageous to improve the students' ability systematically. Only after at least two semesters' courses can students gradually grasp comprehensive knowledge systematically, form the habit of exercising and then lay a solid foundation of life-long practice.5.Because colleges haven' t unified the textbooks, the teaching contents are monotonous. Methods should be taken to create conditions and enrich the contents.Pure technical " marking system " is detrimental to the comprehensive assessment of the students' levels.Taking every factor into overall consideration,we should take the form of " level plus grade " system.6.It is true that five colleges of Shandong province possess relatively poor ground and equipment, which are disadvantageous to the Tae Kwon do courses.7.A majority of students select Tae Kwon do course with a clear objective. However, scores are intended among a minority of students who hold a passive attitude in the course of exercising. Therefore,it would be advisable for colleges to reform the optional course system.Instructors may make efforts to cultivate the students' interest, strengthen their consciousness of Physical Education, establish correct attitude and clarify the objective.
