Along with the opening of hukou(household registration) system in Shanghai step by step,more and more immigrants from countryside and other cities attain the Shanghai hukou,and become Shanghai citizens in law.However,the subjective identity of these newly Shanghai citizens are affected by many factors,such as the institutional,economical and cultural factors.The present research analyzes the factors,which influence the residents in Shanghai who recognize themselves as "Shanghainess",by using of the survey data of "the life situation of residents in Shanghai" in 2008.The author finds that,whether the residents hold the Shanghai hukou,and whether they could speak Shanghai dialect skillfully will affect them to recognize themselves as "Shanghainess" importantly.Those who with the Shanghai hukou think themselves as "Shanghainess" more likely than those who without,those who can speak Shanghai dialect also think themselves as "Shanghainess" more likely than those who can not.The effect of hukou is more significant than the master of Shanghai dialect.This research also finds that income,status and education have not significant effects on the identification of"Shanghainess".The author lastly highlights the policy implication of the research results and point out that the reform of hukou system is strategically important for the construction of harmonious society.
