Students Irrational Beliefs, Stress Response After The Earthquake Prediction,

The earthquake happened on May 12th 2008 in Sichuan brought big shock to all the victims. As an important group, the college students in Chengdu had also suffered from the disaster. Combined with the analysis of the students'degree of irrational beliefs, the investigation of their stress responses to the earthquake would be of great significance to the mental health education of the college students.This research was aimed at analyzing the relationship between the irrational beliefs (IBS) of college students and their stress responses to the 512 Earthquake. After 2 weeks the quake happened, 320 college students were investigated which were from freshmen to junior students at 4 universities in Chengdu, with the form of IES-R and self-designed Irrational Beliefs Questionnaire(IBSQ). The result showed that:(1)The researcher found four factors in the self-designed IBSQ: absolutely demandingness (AB), awflizing (AWF), over generalization (OG) and low frustration tolerance (LFT).(2)The IBS were positive correlate with the stress responses to the earthquake. The four factors of IBS could predict the level of stress response, among which the LFT could predict mostly.(3)By the comparison of the mean and the standard deviation of IBS, we found: the females'mean of IBS was higher than males', among which the females'LFT was higher than males'significantly(P<.05), while the other 3 factors had no significant difference(P>.05); Medical students'IBS of 4 factors were lower than Liberal Arts and Science students', with no significant difference(P>.05); There were no significant changing difference among grades; The IBS of Students come from country was lower than the students'from city, with no significant difference(P>.05).(4) By the comparison of the mean and the standard deviation of stress responses, we found: females'mean was higher than males', but had no significant statistic difference (P>.05); There was significant difference between Medical students'stress responses and Liberal Arts (P<.05), while it had no significant difference between Science students and Medical ones, or between Science and Liberal Arts (P>.05); The stress response mean of students come from country was lower than the students'from city (P>.05).In a conclusion, the stress responses level of the college students has a close connection with their IBS level. In order to protect students from the threats of over stress response, we should pay attention to their cognitive approaches, and guide them to improve rational beliefs level.
