Mainly through providing some supports to students, Scaffolding Learning helps individuals with learning difficulties to build the understanding of knowledge. Scaffolding Learning believes that, in order to make the students with learning difficulties develop, it is necessary to give them some supports similar to the one used in the construction site, between the level of development they have already got and their potential level of development, thus the students can climb the supports step by step for achieving the purpose of completing the learning task, building knowledge and understanding gradually. The theoretical basis for Scaffolding Learning is primarily from Vygotsky's"Zone of Proximal Development"theory and constructivist learning theory. In this study, the author describes Scaffolding Learning and its application in the elementary school mathematics teaching through five parts. Chapter One introduces the general picture and the theoretical basis of Scaffolding Learning. In this chapter, the author describes the background of Scaffolding Learning in detail, and traces the developing history of its theoretical foundation. Chapter Two gives a basic overview for Scaffolding Learning. In this chapter, the author elaborates on the basic concepts and features related to Scaffolding Learning. Chapter Three is the classroom-based organizations of Scaffolding Learning. This chapter takes the major importance in this study. In which, the author shows in detail several organization processes and criteria for the practical application of Scaffolding Learning. Chapter Four focuses on applying Scaffolding Learning to the study of school learning in maths. In this chapter, the author introduces, in the form of cases, the process of practical application in Scaffolding Learning. Chapter Five is the conclusion and the outlook. This chapter summarizes the significance and the current problems of Scaffolding Learning, and some efforts that are worth discussing in the future.
