USB as a new PC protocol makes the connection between the PC and peripherals much more efficient and convenient. It is a fast, bidirectional, isochronous, low-cost, dynamically attachable serial interface that is consistent with the requirements of the PC platform of today and tomorrow. RS-232 (single-ended) was introduced in 1962, has remained widely used through the industry. RS-232 is simple, universal, well understood and supported but it has some serious shortcomings. The lack of flexibility in reconfiguring the PC has been acknowledged. The addition of external peripherals continues to be constrained by port availability until USB bus was come. The USB interface is regarded as a configuration criterion on today' s computer. USB port runs very high speeds and supports up to 127 physical devices. It will replace the RS-232 as a serial interface of PC platform in the near future. Therefore, many peripherals face the problem of converting from RS-232 to USB.By introducing the protocol of USB and RS-232 the principle of USB-RS-232 converter is told in this paper. Base on the experimental ^turlv, It illustrates how to design the circuit to make a USB-RS-232 converter with the FT232BM I.C. .The software inside the FT232BM and how to write the device driver on PC is mentioned in this paper . The USB-RS-232 converter is designed successfully after the debugging and testing. As a conclusion this paper is said that the connecting between the PC and the RS-232 device is easy and stable through the USB-RS-232 converter .The attached RS-232 peripherals share the convenience of USB such as plug-and-play, highspeed, allows to be attached, configured, used, and detached while the host and other peripherals are in operation .The USB-RS-232 converter is pretty utility for the users of RS-232 peripherals.
