Pentium instruction set is compatible with Intel486, it is classicCISC instruction set and is complex in function and variable in length。 So research on how to design a suitable decoder can speedup the instruction decoding, enhance the efficiency of the instruction pipeline, and consequently improve the performance of microprocessor effectively.I was working on the "National Advanced Research Project", during which I finished the design and verification of the instruction decoder and micro-operation in "Longtium C2"~ a 32bit CISC microprocessor. "Longtium C2".In addition, the design of Pentium instruction set has been discussed in this thesis."Longtium C2" is compatible with Intel486DX4 in instruction set,design using 0.18um ASIC library, design working frequency is 133MHZ, average power consumption is 2.0W (133MHz) ,The research work of this paper mainly includes:Deeply analyzed the instruction type, instruction format, data type, addressing-form of Pentium instruction set and 80486 instruction set.Designed and improved on the decoder unit of Longtium C2, and given the verification scheme of the decoder unit.Summarized the method and strategy of CISC instruction set's micro-operation design, designed the format of Longtium C2's micro-instruction, discussed and designed the micro-operation of Pentium instruction set.The dissertation's work is not only carried out for the design of LongtiumC2's decoder unit, but also summarize the strategy of CISC instruction set's micro-opercation design. The research work offers design considerations and technological reserves for designing advanced microprocessor in future.
