This paper is devoted to making a tentative study on the "ethical basis of socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics". The so-called "ethical basis" of some kind of economic life is making use of Max Weber’s concept expression way. It means that what we are going to study is the so-called "ethical basis" in close relation with the "practical action" of all kinds of behavioral agents in the socialist economy life with Chinese characteristics or in the words of Max Weber, we need to study the intrinsic "ethos" of socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics, instead of the values, moral consciousness or ethical theory of the superstructure of socialist economy life with Chinese characteristics.Although we have highlighted that the core object of study in this paper is the ethical basis or ethical effect facing and coming from the establishment and development process of socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics rather than various kinds of moral idea or ethic theory which widely popular in contemporary China, but the full possession of and critical analyses on the correlational research achievement of our predecessors is our first step to center on the research questions in the abstract, just like the ideological critique is our mentor steering us to face the realistic social foundation in which these ideologies take root. Therefore, being a preliminary analysis, Chapter One in Part One and Part Two (Chapter Three in full text) shall be focused on the text study while undertaking some synoptical and critical combing on the research approach and primary academic viewpoints of Max Weber, Yu Yingshi, Wang Defeng and Lu Xiaohe so as to gain the basic conception and research line for our next discussion. Based on this, we attempt to interweave the four view angles composed of the normative analysis, experimental description of the ethical basis of socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics plus the ethical premise, ethical effect of socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics to formulate the heart of this paper, that is the Chapter Two in Part Two (Chapter Four in full text). The basic conclusion drawn from this study mainly includes:(1) In adaption to the establishment and development process of socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics, the ethical basis of socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics is a historic research object combining both the logic and history together (precondition and effect; normative analysis and experimental description) rather than a research objective in the sense of an accomplished "historical fact" nor a "logical fact"; (2) Socialism, market economy and ancient cultural tradition constitute the three basic dimensions for a normative analysis of the ethical basis of socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics, while the party and government, enterprise (in particular state-owned enterprise) and individuals make up the three view angles for experimental description of the ethical basis of socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics; (3) the organic integration of three fundamental factors composed of socialism (classical Marxism), modernity (modernization of technological means and legislative environment) and Chinese ancient cultural tradition (Confucianism Taoism and Buddhism) as well as developing a road to modernization which can rule out the western modernization malpractice while occupying its civilized achievement in the construction process of our socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics is the key to the great rejuvenation of Chinese nation, and whether the socialist market economy with Chinese characteristics and Marxism with Chinese characteristics can develop to their maturity and stereotypes, with important historical significance.
