Cooperative Innovation Process Mechanism, Project-based Perspective

Faster technological development, shorter product life-cycles, and more intense global competition have transformed the current competitive environment for most firms. The change in competitive landscape makes it of great importance for organizations to conduct technology innovation continuously. However, with the increasing complexity of new technologies, and the growing trend in cross-integration of different disciplines and technologies, coupled with their constraints in internal resources and capacity, it becomes increasingly difficult for enterprises to implement technology innovation just rely on in-house initiatives. Thus, inter-organizational collaboration is widely used in development and commercialization of new technology. One focus of inter- organizational collaboration is complementarily, industry, universites and research institutes possess different and complementary resources and competencies, the linkage between them could create inter-organizational synergies, and makes the innovation activities fruitful. However, in the collaboration practice among industry, universites and research institutes, many cases of success and failure revealed that the mechanism is essential. Then, the operation process of collaboration among industry, universites and research institutes is analyzed, based on which, the life cycle is identified. The logic structure of collaboration mechanisms involved in the entire process is scheduled depend on the life cycle, in succession, the collaboration mechanisms are studied. Then, the mutual relations of the collaboration mechanisms are analyzed, and a integrated model is provided with the purpose to put forward a systematic framework to guide the linkage among industry, universites and research institutes in regional and national innovation system. The main contents of this paper are as follows:1. The operation process of collaboration among industry, universites and research institutes is analyzed, based on which, the three-stage life cycle is identified. The logic structure of collaboration mechanisms involved in the entire process is scheduled. Therefore, a logic path for this paper is brought forward.2.
