Emerging Technologies, R & D Team Performance Influencing Factors

The environment outside and inside of organization is becoming more and more complex because of the influence by emerging technology. Nowadays, the competition is becoming more and more severity, the emerging technologies are updating each day, and the customers'demand is changing fast. So most of the companies have to research and develop new product or services. But in most of top managers in the emerging technology companies don't know much about the technologies, so they need to use research and development teams to do the job.Research and development teams in emerging technology companies are different with other work teams in marketing environment, task and membership, so the factors, which influence the team performance, are different in these two kinds of teams. In this paper, we found two kinds of team performance; they are product performance and team efficiency. And we found three kinds of factors which influence team performance: (1) team structure, including team background experience, team member diversity; (2) Organization environment, including management environment, resource environment and culture environment; (3) team process, including goal setting, communication and cooperation, team creativity, task orientation.Through the investigation we found that team process is the most important factor. Goal setting, communication and cooperation and task orientation are very important to product performance. And goal setting is very important to team efficiency. Team background experience and team member diversity are very important to team process.Organization environment is very important to team process as well. The product performance will decline as the team efficiency increased. And we found that team performance are significant different in different team-size, industry and companies. Finally, we built a path model for R&D teams, discussed the shortage of our research, and point out what we should do in the future research.
