In 21st century, with the acceleration of economic globalization, technology innovation becomes a decisive factor to economic development. The strength of a country or the competence of a firm increasingly depends on its capability of technology innovation. Because of its importance, technology innovation becomes a research hotspot in the scientific community in recent years. Many scholars study the effects of different factors on technology innovation from different angles. The results find that there is a great difference between the different sectors with technology innovation activities. From the perspective of industry characteristics, this study researches the effect of industrial factors on technology innovation activities, with the data of the 28 manufacturing sectors in China.After a review of literatures, this paper finds out two factors describing the industry characteristics: technological regime and market structure. With introducing the absorptive capacity as the moderate variable between industrial factors and technological innovation, we build a conceptual model in which the technology innovation is influenced by technological regime, market structure and absorptive capacity. Measuring the technological regime, market structure, absorptive capacity and technological innovation with the relevant data of the 28 manufacturing sectors in China, this study uses statistic analysis to validate the model. The results suggest that:(1) Technological regime has a significant impact on technology innovation. More technical opportunities will lead to more innovation fund input, higher efficiency and effectiveness of innovation output; more knowledge spillover will result in more innovation fund input and higher effectiveness of innovation output; higher appropriabiltiy will bring more fund input in innovation by enterprises, lower efficiency and effectiveness of innovation output; more basic-research-natured knowledge characteristics will lead to lower efficiency and effectiveness of innovation output.(2) Market structure has a significant impact on technology innovation. Higher competition will lead to more innovation fund input, more fund input in innovation by enterprises, higher efficiency and effectiveness of innovation output; bigger firm size will bring higher efficiency and effectiveness of innovation output.(3) Absorptive capacity has a significant impact on technology innovation. Stronger absorptive capacity will arouse more innovation fund input, higher efficiency and effectiveness of innovation output.(4) Absorptive capacity moderates the relationship between industry characteristics and technology innovation. On one hand, stronger absorptive capacity will bring a more remarkable relationship between technical opportunity, firm size and technology innovation; on the other hand, stronger absorptive capacity will arousea less remarkable relationship between knowledge spillover, appropriabiltiy, characteristic of knowledge, market competition and technology innovation.
