Lubricating oil additives, important fine chemicals, is an important means to improve the quality of lube base oils, an important means for improving lubricant performance, energy saving and an important means to reduce pollution. After decades of research, lubricant additives have made great progress on both quality and quantity. Viscosity Index Improver (VII) is a class of lubricating oil additives, which is early in the development of lubricating oil and the adding amount is larger than the others in the lubricant, consumption accounts more than 45% for total additives. Developing effective multi-functional viscosity index modifier is imperative. This paper take methylacrylic acid ester as main raw materials, to product new viscosity index improver, the research has made success.The content, this paper mainly studies, can be divided into two parts: The first part is the synthesis of viscosity index improver. First of all, we synthesize six monomers of alkyl methacrylate, and influence factors of the esterification are confirmed. Second, eight series of polymers are produced by using alkyl methylacrylate with alkyl C8-18, maleic anhydride, vinyl acetate and methyl methacrylate as monomers. Finally, the structure of products is identified by IR spectroscopy. A fine synthesis condition of the viscosity index improver for 150SN is: The reaction temperature is 75-85℃and the reaction time is 5 hours. The quality of initiator BPO is 5 grams per mole. The solvent volume is 1300 milliliters per mole. The second part is test in terms of GB. Through the additives experiment, the viscosity index improver is selected for two batches of the lubricating base oil 150SN of Dalian Petrochemisty Filiale. The result shows that one of copolymers comprising of cetyl methylacrylate and malefic anhydride has the best effect. Dosage will also affect the results, the optimal dosage range is from 1.0% to 2.0%. There are some differences in the nature of the two batches of the lubricating basic oil, but the susceptibility is more consistent. Finally, the conclusions indicate that 2 #, 3 # and 7 # used as viscosity index improver can highly increase base oil's viscosity index and thickening abilities.
