The requirement of lubricating oil is becoming much higher with a rapiddevelopment of auto industry. So the simple quality improvement of lubricating oil byrefinement can’t satisfy the demanding requirements of high speed, load and power. As we know, additive that would be of great benefit to the improvement of machinefunction and reduce resistance is the heart of lubricating oil. The main lubricating oiladditive is VI (viscosity index) improver which is used in the oil manufacture ofmulti-level internal combustion engine, hydraumatic and gear. So the addition of VIimprover can get multi-level oil both with a better starting performance in lowtemperature and a proper viscosity in high temperature that can be used widely.Nowadays, the VI improver frequently used is PMA, OCP, HSD, PIB, etc. OCPis widely used in high-end internal combustion engine with a perfect property of heatstability, densification, dissolubility and economic in price. But OCP is still not goodenough as a single effect additive. Because of this, a compulsory task of developingan effective and multi-function VI improver is needed immediately by leading in thegroups of disperse, antioxidant and wear-resistant through chemical modification. This article develops the novel multi-function VI improver based on the OCP.The followings are three direction of research:1. A controlled degradation by catalyze thermal-oxidation degradation has beenused based on the initiator of organic peroxides so that we can ensure the bestmanufacture condition of OCP VI improver. The final product, which the initiatorconsists of150SN base oil, J0010OCP by16%and peroxide DCP by0.1%, has ashear stability of20and densification of more than6.50mm~2/s degraded at170℃for4hours.2. After the functionalization treatment of degraded single effect OCP VIimprover and import the group with nitrogen to macromolecule chain of OCP throughstem grafting and amination, we get an OCP VI improver with dispersity. Through theanalyses of single factor and orthogonal experiment we conclude that the product’sdensification is more than5.83mm~2/s and dispersity is65.22%using peroxidebenzoyl as initiator by0.5%(quality of OCP), maleic anhydride by12%, amide by7%under the reaction temperature of160℃in stem grafting and140℃in amination. So this product can be applied in high-end lubricating oil.3. The degraded product treated by stem grafting and amination can form amulti-effect OCP VI improver with dispersity and antioxidation after a furtherreaction with anti-oxidant compound that will lead antioxidant group inmacromolecule chain of OCP. Through the best program condition confirmed bysingle factor and orthogonal experiment, we can find that product’s densification anddispersity is more than5.92mm~2/s and63.50%with a lower coking and panel of15.8mg and4.5level with maleic anhydride, amide and anti-oxidant compound by12%,7%and5%under the reaction temperature of160℃in stem grafting,150℃inamination and160℃in antioxidant reaction. So this product can be applied inhigh-end lubricating oil.
