Coastal area is a very special place. It is not only the edge of the city, butalso a part of the coastal zone. As the most active and concentrated area inhuman activities and the most important habitats in the ecological environment,coastal area is seemed to be the main places for survival and reproduction ofhuman and countless endangered species. It is a major issue that related to thehuman future for the healthy development of the costal area ecological systemand its stability.Recently, under high strength interference of the human activities, coastalarea ecological environment is not optimistic. Only to rely on a single method ofenvironmental management has not been enough to solve the coastal area'scomplex pollution problem. It is urgent in need of a new comprehensivemanagement measure. Researching on the ecosystem health evaluation ofcoastal areas, this paper builds the assessment theory system and evaluationmethod of the ecosystem health to diagnose ecosystem structure and functionstates from regional level. which is the new method to synthetically manage thecoastal area ecosystem, not only has an important theoretical significance, andalso can provide comprehensive management decision-making basis for marinemanagement department.Considering of the particularity of coastal area environment, this paper,combined with the needs of ecosystem health management, divides the coastalarea ecosystem into the two parts factitiously, that is the coastal urban areasubsystem and the offshore water subsystem. Then, it makes the theory researchof coastal area ecosystem health assessment, through constructing the coastalinshore livable environment assessment index system about coastal urban areassubsystem and the ecosystem health assessment index system on the offshorewater subsystem, respectively. The main research's contents and its results are as follows:(1) Coastal area ecosystem health is a new research field, not yet formed aunified theory system. This paper summarizes and analyzes the research resultsof ecosystem health and its related study from domestic to foreign, andconstructs the ecosystem health assessment theory system based on theparticularity of coastal area. The theory system includes two parts, the coastalurban area subsystem and the offshore water subsystem.(2) According to the coastal urban area subsystem, it focus on the livabilityproblem of coastal city habitat environment that is closely related to the people'slife and explains the concept of coastal livable environment and its connotation.Based on the principle of index selection, this paper filters out all of the index bythe method of frequency statistics and theory analysis, and determines its weightby using the method of analytic hierarchy process, and then constructs thecoastal livable environment assessment index system from the 5 aspects (40events) of living environment, that is social civilization degree, economic wealthdegree, environment beauty degree, public safety degree and life comfort degree.And the evaluation result of Shanghai livable environment in the coastal urbanarea from the year of 2004 to 2010 is that: 79.39, 81.89, 82.98, 83.78, 85.87,86.32 and 86.74 points in 100 points with total scores. In the light of thestandard, It can be classified as " livable environment " for Shanghai coastal cityenvironment from the year of 2005 to 2010, and "more livable environment" forthe year of 2004.(3)According to the offshore waters subsystem, it focus on the ecosystemhealth problems of offshore water ecosystem that is severely impacted bypeople's daily life and production, and explains the concept of offshore waterecosystem health and its connotation. Based on the principle of index selection,this paper filters out all of the index by indexes system method using the methodof ecotoxicology and ecosystem iatrology, and determines its weight by usinganalytic hierarchy process with the analysis software "yaahp", and thenconstructs the offshore ecosystem health assessment index system from theocean environment index, marine ecology index and marine physics index as the3 aspects and 21 evens, by the basic principle of ecology and biology asfoundation. And the evaluation result of Shanghai offshore water ecosystemhealth from the year of 2004 to 2007 as following: 59.5, 63.22, 65.36 and 64.77 points in 100 points with total scores. In the light of the standard, it can beclassified as " Sub-health " state for Shanghai offshore water ecosystem from theyear of 2004 to 2007.(4) Quoted the concept of "coordination degree", this paper carries out theresearch of collaborative health's developed trend between the coastal urbanlivable environment and offshore water ecosystem health. Constructing thecollaborative health development valuation model, it draws a conclusion ofcollaborative health's developed trend between Shanghai coastal urban livableenvironment and Shanghai offshore water ecosystem health from the year of2004 to 2007. And its results: be in basic coordination state. The offshore waterecosystem health level lags behind the coastal urban environment livable level,and on the whole, collaborative health's developed trend in growth state from theyear of 2004 to 2006 and the year of 2008, only 2007s in weak state.
