As very important processing equipment in the modern manufacturing, injection mold plays a great role in all kinds of new products development. Especially in the automotive, light industry, etc, injection molding technology is one of the most important technologies. And tool electrode is the key process equipment for using EDM to complete injection mold production. Electrode quality can affect injection mold manufacturing efficiency and product quality directly. Because mould manufacturing usually needs to use the electrode in number,electrode design and two-dimensional drawing become a very hard and repeated work. They are the most time consuming parts in mold production. So the traditional methods of electrode design and producing can not conform to the need of modern mold enterprise. They urgently need a kind of automatic electrode cad system, by using this system man-machine interaction frequency and the ability requirements of electrode designers can be reduced. In this case, the speed of electrode design drastically will increase and injection mold design and manufacturing cycle will be shortened.In view of the above questions, this paper analyzed the characteristics of EDM and the requirements of electrode manufacturing. We also researched the shortcomings of the previous electrode design system. On this basis automatic electrode design and drawing system requirements analysis was proposed. The whole structure of the system has been established, and each module function has designed. We also proposed surface classification method, according to every type of surface; corresponding electrode head design scheme has been completed. These can ensure that the electrode model will be built automatic. In addition, the data structure of electrode information and have been constructed. The program for reading and writing the attribute information of Electrode entities has been written. This can make sure the data of all the electrodes are saved. On the other hand we also researched the electrode automatic projection and how to configure the standard drawing frame by making and reading the Excel document.The system is based on UG platform, and has been developed by using UG secondary development technology. It can greatly reduce Manual operations, accelerate Design speed, and maintain the design's accuracy. The application effect is good.
