With the development of modern technology, late-model material such as cermet and optical glass are more and more widely used in martial, aeronautic and civil fields. For example, the mechanical seals for reactor coolant pump is made by Wolfram Carbide(WC). However the highly surface quality and the highly form accuracy lead them difficulty to machining for the characters of WC. The study about machining to cermet is too short in our country, the seal for reactor coolant pump still rely on import.Overseas cover little about processing research on complex surface of WC material, and have strict confidentiality on the key technology and core theory. As the effective processing method of difficult machine materials, the grinding machining accuracy affected by many factors. This article reviews the developing overview of WC grinding. Aim at the characteristic of accurate grinding, the major research efforts include the following points.1) Based on several different mode of accurate grinding, the cermet material removal mechanism theory are introduced. A flexible hinge precision feeding device drove by PZT is designed.2) Single point parallel grinding process experiments at 45°obliquity are done on general machine tools. The affect of process parameters to surface roughness and the amount of wheel wear are studied.3) Machining accuracy effected by grinding depth and amount of wheel wear are analyzed. Based on the existent modification program of grinding wheel, double grinding wheels trimming program method is designed.4) Based on the WC seals for reactor coolant pump design parameters, the software of accurate grinding is compiled and grinding tool path is programming. The WC seal ginding is conducted on the precision machine. The machining results and the error are analyzed and the method to improve surface accuracy is proposed.
