Tire building drum is the key part of the tire building equipment. The mechanism type of tire building drum was changed, according to different tire forming processes. A novel radial telescopic tire building drum with the characteristics of smart compactness, large radial telescopic ratio, high stiffness and strong stability that can be used to manufacture radial tire was presented and studied, the external slab of which is driven by the movement of the internal slab. The following are the main contents.Mechanism structure and movement principle of this building drum is systematically introduced. Based on it, the incident matrix and design atlas were constructed, several feasible structures were proposed, by analyzing topological structure of it. These feasible structures provided references for the development of the innovation design of novel building drum.The impact of slab number and slab Fan-shaped angle on the contraction ratio were analyzed. Kinematics equation, expression of contraction ratio and pressure angle were established. The main factors which affect force characteristics and extensible ability of this building drum were summarized. A kinematics design method of this novel radial telescopic building drum was proposed, which can optimize maximum pressure angle. Finally, an example was given.Stiffness model of the internal/external slab driving mechanism was established according to the principle of virtual work and geometry deformation analysis. Based on it, the changing regularity of slab stiffness with the expanding of the building drum was revealed by the numerical simulation.Virtual prototype of the novel building drum was established with the software of Pro/Engineer through the process of structure design and general assembly. Then, motion simulation was performed in order to verify the feasibility of the novel building drum, which provides certain reference for the design of real prototype.
