Recently, self-stable precipitation polymerization was found to synthesise monodisperse microspheres. Compared to traditional processes of polymerization, such as emulsion polymerization, dispersion polymerization and seeding polymerization, it was provided with extraordinarily obvious superiorities, and could be applied widely. For now, the report about polymerization of maleic anhydride and dicyclopentadiene was infrequent, using solution polymerization usually, not to mention the polymerization of maleic anhydride and cyclopentadiene. Poly (maleic anhydride-co-dicyclopentadiene) microspheres and poly (maleic anhydride-co-cyclopentadiene) microspheres was synthetized via self-stable precipitation polymerization. The mechanism of self-stable precipitation polymerization, the copolymerization way of maleic anhydride and dicyclopentadiene, and the structure of the copolymer were studied.Poly (maleic anhydride-co-dicyclopentadiene) microspheres were prepared by self-stable precipitation polymerization. And the impact of solvents, monomer ratio, reaction temperature, dosage of initiators and monomer concentration on the polymer conversion, molecular, molecular weight distribution, microsphere morphology, diameter and diameter distribution were discussed. The diameter could be controllable. The forming process of Poly (maleic anhydride-co-dicyclopentadiene) microspheres was studied by a series of kinetic research, and summarized the forming mechanism of microsphere. Furthermore, the copolymerization way of maleic anhydride and dicyclopentadiene, and the structure of the copolymer were researched by IR, NMR and titration. It can be confirmed that the copolymer of maleic anhydride and dicyclopentadiene synthesized from this system was linear and alternate.Cyclopentadiene can be achieved from decomposition of dicyclopentadiene, and was polymerized with maleic anhydride via self-stable precipitation polymerization to prepare copolymer microspheres. Also the influence of solvents, reaction temperature, dosage of initiators and monomer concentration to the polymer conversion, microsphere morphology, diameter and diameter distribution were discussed. At last, the Optimum reaction conditions for preparing Poly (maleic anhydride-co-dicyclopentadiene) microspheres with smooth and clean surface, uniform diameter and highly monodisperse were discovered.
