Self-stable precipitation polymerization of a-methyl styrene and maleic anhydride was studied. Influences of reaction media, monomer concentrations, amounts of initiator and monomer ration on the morphology, size and size distribution of microspheres prepared by self-stable precipitation polymerization were investigated. Monodisperesed copolymeric microspheres with different morphologies and sizes were synthesized. The reaction kinetics in which monodispersed copolymeric microspheres were prepared was researched. Cross-linked copolymeric microspheres were prepared with divinyl benzene, Ethyleneglycol dimethacrylate and Trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate as the cross linker. The effect of amounts of cross linker on the morphology, size and size distribution of microspheres was investigated. Necklace-like and core-shell copolymeric microspheres were synthesized and the influences on the morphology and size of these microspheres were studied. With poly(a-methyl styrene-co-maleic anhydride) prepared by self-stable precipitation polymerization as the initiator the reinitiated free-radical polymerization was carried out. Influences of reaction temperature, amounts of poly(a-methyl styrene-co-maleic anhydride), reaction media and time on the free-radical polymerization of methyl methacrylate (MMA) were investaged. It can be concluded that the free-radical polymerization of MMA can be initiated by poly(a-methyl styrene-co-maleic anhydride). Some results about the conversion of reinitiated polymerization and molecular weight of related polymers were obtained.
