Objectives This research is combined with the actual situation of a coastal industrial area which planning to develop four main industries including steel, petroleum, electricity and port,to obtain the basic air data and to know atmospheric environment quality of a coastal industrial area by investigating the industrial area at building and partial operation stage, in order to understand and probe the ways to improve the atmospheric environmental quality and comprehensive measures to prevent and control pollution. This study was able to provide scientific evidence for developing long-term atmospheric monitoring, formulating the policy of atmospheric environmental protection, proceeding of atmospheric environmental impact assessment, and carrying out sustainable development. Methods Steel factory,Power plant,Crude oil dock,Ore dock,Coal dock,Bulk and general cargo dock and Land bank were chosen as the sample point where the samples of air were collected. The SO2,NO2,TSP,PM10,CO and O3 of air were the main monitoring indicators. Assessment of the sample points and the whole industrial area were carried out by calculating the air pollutant sub-index ,the air quality index and the equal standard pollution load ratio.Results1 Each functional zone pollutant levels1.1 Pollutant levels in March 2009The experimental results in March 2009 shew that the concentration of SO2 in Power plant was the highest(0.060mg/m3),Second was Steel factory(0.059 mg/m3),then the lowest was Land bank, the concentration of SO2 in Power plant and Steel factory were higher than in Land bank, the difference was significant. The concentration of NO2 in Steel factory was the highest(0.0314mg/m3),while the Land bank was the lowest (0.0252mg/m3),there was significant difference in concentration of NO2 between the Steel factory and Land bank. The concentration of TSP in Bulk and general cargo dock was the highest(0.498mg/m3),the Land bank was the lowest(0.233 mg/m3),the difference between Bulk and general cargo dock and Land bank was significant. The concentration of PM10 in Steel factory was the highest(0.0019mg/m3), while the Land bank was the lowest(0.0011mg/m3),there was significant difference. The CO concentration of each functional areas were far lower than the national standards. The concentration of O3 in Steel factory was the highest(0.0630mg/m3), the Land bank was the lowest(0.0244mg/m3),there was no significant difference in concentration of O3 between each functional areas and the Land bank. And the concentration of pollutants were lower than the national standards. In March 2009,the sub-index of SO2 in Power plant was the highest(0.086),the sub-index of NO2 in Steel factory was the highest(0.131),the sub-index of TSP in Bulk and general cargo dock was the highest (0.997),the sub-index of PM10 in Steel factory was the highest(0.0077),the sub-index of O3 in Steel factory was the highest(0.315). 1.2 Pollutant levels in September 2009The results in September 2009 shew that the concentration of SO2 in Power plant was the highest(0.068mg/m3),then the lowest was Land bank(0.037 mg/m3),the concentration of SO2 in Power plant were higher than in Land bank, the difference was significant. The concentration of NO2 in Crude oil dock was the highest(0.0552mg/m3),while the Land bank was the lowest(0.0426mg/m3),there was no significant difference among the NO2 concentration of each functional areas with the control area. The TSP concentration in Ore dock was the highest(0.373mg/m3),the Land bank was the lowest(0.210 mg/m3),the concentration of TSP in Ore dock and Bulk and general cargo dock were higher than in Land bank, the difference was significant. The content of PM10 in Steel factory was the highest(0.0021mg/m3), while the Land bank was the lowest(0.0014mg/m3), there was significant difference. The CO concentration of each functional areas were far lower than the national standards. The concentration of O3 in Steel factory was the highest(0.0644 mg/m3),the Land bank was the lowest(0.0270 mg/m3),there was no significant difference in concentration of O3 between each functional areas and the Land bank. And the concentration of pollutants were lower than the national standards. In September 2009,the sub-index of SO2 in Power plant was the highest(0.097),the sub-index of NO2 in Crude oil dock was the highest(0.230),the sub-index of TSP in Ore dock was the highest (0.745),the sub-index of PM10 in Steel factory was the highest(0.0083),the sub-index of O3 in Steel factory was the highest(0.322).2 The air quality index and the equal standard pollution load ratio of a coastal industrial areaThe air quality index of a coastal industrial area on March was classⅠ(0.426),The air quality index of Bulk and general cargo dock was the highest(0.531),while the Land bank was the lowest(0.264).The air quality index of the coastal industrial area on September was classⅠ(0.389),The air quality index of Steel factory was the highest(0.441), while the Land bank was the lowest(0.257).The air quality index of a coastal industrial area on September was inferior to March 2009.To compare the air quality indexs on March and September 2009, the air quality indexs in Steel factory and Power plant on September was higher than March, while other functional areas were just the opposite, and Land bank remain unchanged. the equal standard pollution load ratio on March can be ranged by large to small order as Bulk and general cargo dock, Ore dock, Coal dock,Crude oil dock, Steel factory, Power plant, Land bank. the equal standard pollution load ratio on September can be ranged by large to small order as Steel factory,Ore dock, Bulk and general cargo dock,Coal dock, Power plant,Crude oil dock,Land bank.3 The correlativity between pollutants and the climate conditionThe concentration of NO2 were positively correlated with temperature and humidity, and negative correlation with wind speed. The concentration of TSP were negative correlated with temperature, and positively correlation with wind speed. The correlation was found between the concentration of PM10 and temperature was significant. The concentration of CO and wind speed had negative significance correlation, the temperature and humidity had positive significance correlation, and negative significance correlation with wind speed. ConclusionsThe air quality of Steel factory,Power plant,Crude oil dock,Land bank on March 2009 were classⅠ,which belonged to cleaning air, others were classⅡ, which was at the verge of cleanliness. The air quality of a coastal industrial area was classⅠ,which belonged to cleaning air.The air pollution of Ore dock,Coal dock,Bulk and general cargo dock were more serious. The air quality of each functional areas were classⅠ,and the air quality of a coastal industrial area was classⅠ,which belonged to cleaning air. The pollution of Steel factory,Ore dock,Bulk and general cargo dock were more serious than others. The concentration of TSP which was primary pollutant had the greatest impact on air quality in industrial areas. All the contents of air pollutants in each functional area as well as the whole industrial area were lower than the related standards. The air quality index of a coastal industrial area was higher on March 2009 than September 2009,the pollution on March 2009 was heavier.
