As the third generation of host molecules, calixarenes and their derivatives have been using in the molecular recognition systems because of their unique advantages. During the last few years, the possible use of the water-soluble calix[n]arenes in biological and pharmaceutical applications has occupied a current interest. In this paper, amphiphilic calixarene derivatives were synthesized using p-tert-butyl-phenol as an original reactant and some their applications in analytical chemistry were studied. The content consists of following six chapters:In chapter 1, first a general introduction to the origin and synthesis of calixarenes and the progress of their applications in molecular recognition were presented. Based on the concerning updated development and our experiment conditions, the research proposal for this thesis was presented. In chapter 2, the synthesis method and characterization of the calix[4]arene and its derivatives in this paper were described. In chapter 3, the inclusion behavior between p-sulfonated calix[4]arene and melamine was investigated by spectrofluoremetric titrations, the proposed interaction mechanism of the inclusion complex was discussed. In chapter 4, the inclusion interaction of tetrabutyl ether derivatives of p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene towards ascorbic acid was studied. 1HNMR spectra were applied to verify the formation of the complexes. The association constant was calculated by applying a deduced equation. In chapter 5, the fluorescence behavior of tetrabutyl ether derivatives of p-sulfonatocalix[4]arene in methiocarb was investigated. Upon addition of methiocarb, the fluorescence intensity of the fluorescence intensity of SC4Bu was quenched regularly. According to this result, a new fluoremetric method for assaying cephalosporins was developed. In chapter 6, the work of this thesis was summarized briefly, and the following research in future was proposed.
