With the rapid development of modern machinery industry, requirements of material performance that used in part of many products are increased, and therefore, as a kind of material with high wear resistance, application range of the high manganese steel is expanding quickly, however, as a kind of typical difficult-to-cut material, high manganese steel cannot meet the requirements of processing by conventional cutting. Furthermore, special processing methods that commonly used, such as electrical pressing and chemical processing, due to cost and technology constraints, still cannot be applied on a large scale. For these reasons, this paper applies a new ultrasonic vibration cutting technology to the turning of high manganese steel. Ultrasonic vibration cutting system is established, and has a research for tool wear in ultrasonic vibration cutting of high manganese steel. As the heart of the whole system, there are three most important parts of ultrasonic vibration system:ultrasonic generator, transducer and horn. Piezoelectric ceramic transducer is chosen by contrasting between the two kinds which the other one is magnetostriction transducer, and its construction is designed and emulated. Through analyzing several kinds of horns with simply shape which cannot meet the requirements, a cosine composite horn is designed. Then a special fixture is designed which used to installed the ultrasonic vibration system to the lathe, and the whole ultrasonic vibration cutting system is established.According to the theories of metal cutting and tool wear, four factors that influence the tool wear most are confirmed, which are cutting speed, back engagement of cutting edge, amount of feed, and tool amplitude, and wear width of rear face that called VB is chosen as the indicator to measure the state of tool wear. Then appropriate tools based on the requirement of tool material and geometry are chosen.According to orthogonal principle, orthogonal layout that satisfies the experiments is designed, and then ultrasonic vibration cutting experiment of high manganese steel that arranged according to the orthogonal layout are complete.Wear width of rear face is measured by metaloscope, and then range and regression analysis are used to find out the influence law between the four factors and tool wear. Finally, the regression equation is established. At last, ultrasonic vibration cutting and conventional cutting are compared. By ultrasonic vibration cutting, tool wear is smaller, simultaneously, cutting temperature and cutting force are much lower and chip shape is much better than conventional cutting.
