The extraordinary big coalmine accidents occurred frequently, and the consequences, causing heavy casualties, huge economic losses and bad social impacts, are often disastrous. This study uses the major accidents occurred in Chinese coalmines between 1949 and 2008 as the main material, and the statistical analysis and safety comparison as its research methods, to explore the causation mechanism of extraordinary big coalmine accidents. By analyzing the data of flood accidents and gas explosions, the result shows that the causes of different periods's accidents have little changes, and the enhancement of management and technology of those coalmine occurred accidents are limited. Instead of the simple expansion of general accident, there is an internal accident-causing mechanism in extraordinary big coalmine accidents. The significant different causes are obvious in different disaster level accidents, and that the distinctive accident causes are the key reasons which lead to extraordinary big coalmine accidents. The lack of numerous basic core conditions is the root causation of the extraordinary big gas explosion accidents. The causation mechanism of extraordinary big coalmine accidents is summarized and the accident model is established. This paper shows that the differences in the accident causation are the key reason for the accidents, and the lack of a variety of basic core conditions is the root cause of the accidents. By the collective effect of the two factors, the accidents, which could be a general incidents, shows a disastrous consequences. Thus, for effective prevention of extraordinary big coalmine accidents, the basic core conditions, distinctive accident causes and factors of the accident expansion should be particularly concerned as the central issue.
