With the coming of the shortage of the world's energy, developing and making use of the rich resources of oil shale is put on the agenda. The oil shale retort furnace is the key equipment to refining furnace shale oil. But because of its large size and the complexity of its internal reaction, we can't make real-time monitoring of its internal reactions and also instantly control of the production, reaction speed and reaction points for oil shale to prevent explosion, leakage and a halfway reaction. In order to improve the production and enhance economic efficiency, this paper systematically studies on the chemical and physical properties of oil shale, including the reaction rate, reaction temperature, spatial variation in the retort furnace before and after the reaction and the parameters which affect the gas production such as activation energy, ignition points, thermal conductivity and so on and measures the composition of oil shale gas. This research is a foundation to made adequate safety assessment for the oil shale retort furnace. Meanwhile, it provides some useful parameters to use the oil shale safely and efficiently and improve the design of the oil shale retort furnace.
