Rosin which is cheap reproducible resource has great application in synthesis of degradation product with environmental protection. The rosin output of China is the most in all over the world. Thus, development of rosin surfactant has more superior than others. At present, the classification of rosin surfactant is as follows:cationic, anionic, nonionic and amphoteric surfactant. The research of rosin surfactant mainly focuses on anionic and nonionic surfactant, however, there is a little literatures about the synthesis and performance of cationic surfactant recently. In this paper, three cationic emulsifiers are synthesized by the reaction of rosin and polyethylene polyamine. The asphalt particles of emulsified asphalt prepared from cationic emulsifier are positively charged. When come with the aggregate with negative charge, the positively charged asphalt particles combine with it not only through simple mechanical adhesion force, but also with electrochemical force. As a result, the adhesive force has greatly increased which make asphalt particles disperse on the aggregate surface firmly and equably. The cationic emulsified asphalt system has practical value for good stability.The structures and thermal properties of three cationic emulsifiers in the paper were investigated by FT-IR,'H-nuclear magnetic resonance ('H-NMR) and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). Their Krafft points, emulsifying properties, foaming characteristics, stabilities and solubility enhancement were also tested.Three cationic emulsifiers synthesized in the paper were used for preparing emulsified asphalt. Their behavior, such as particle charges, asphalt content, residues on screening, normal viscosities, the property of wrapping coarse aggregate, and the stability stored in normal temperature were tested.The synthesis of three emulsifiers is innovative in molecular design. The raw materials are cheap, and their application and promotion should be value. Compared with traditional emulsifier whose hydrophobic group is made up of aliphatic hydrocarbon, the emulsifier with rosin group as hydrophobic group also shows excellent emulsification performance, so in the paper, three kind of emulsifier with rosin groups were synthesized, which is good for the study on asphalt emulsifier and the modification of abietic acid.
