The technology of numerical control (NC) form-grinding is a new kind of process technology developed rapidly by many countries in recent years. It is widely used in mechanical engineering because of its high efficiency and precision. Based on the foreground of its great application, this paper discusses the technology of form-grinding wheel dressing, which is limited at present.Firstly, based on the literature reviews, different truing and dressing methods are analyzed and compared, and then the structure of truer is designed in the paper. A new way is put forward which dresses the grinding wheel using grinding mode, and can come true on-line continue dressing. It is called diamond rolling wheel dressing method. It has high efficiency and can complete face trimming and truing of grinding wheel in very short time. Besides, it has several strong points:low dressing force, little amount of wear, high dressing precision. The diamond rolling wheel dresser has the advantages of high dressing efficiency, long life-span, simple structure, little volume, and it is easy to cool and install.Excepting for the designing of the structure of truer, electric control uses the siemens S7-200PLC, step motor and driver, frequency-transformer and so on. Rotational speed and direction of the diamond roller wheel are adjusted by them. The process of grinding wheel dressing achieves automation, then the system uses the MD204L human machine interface for simplifying manipulative process and making the factors of experimental research watched. Through communicating with PLC, it makes the control and manipulation of the truer concentrate on the human machine panel.The evaluation methods for the quality of dressed grinding wheel are described in this paper. They are grinding force evaluation, grinding temperature evaluation and wheel topography evaluation. The measuring methods for grinding force, grinding temperature and wheel topography are introduced; and how to evaluate the quality of dressed grinding wheel by wheel topography is also introduced. Grinding wheel dressing and grinding experiments are also researched in this paper. The experiments include the selection of experimental condition and facility, the arrangement of experimental scheme, the measurement of experimental data and the experimental data processing. The influence of dressing process parameters on the grinding performance can be analyzed by using single factor test, which can supply theoretical basis for the selection of rolling wheel dressing technological parameters. Dressing technological parameters refer to the factor of the ratio of speed q, dressing feed a (μm/r) and revolutions with non-feed n (r). Grinding performance refers to specific metal removal Q'(mm3/mm), surface roughness Ra (μm), grinding ratio G, specific grinding energy u (J/mm3).The main research contents and deficiencies are summarized, and suggestions for the research work needed in the future are given in the end of the paper.
