Coumarin derivatives are widely studied by most chemists and pharmacologists because of their various biological activities and inherent photochemical characteristics. In the fields of anti-HIV drug, fluorescence dyes, fluorescence probe, biological labeling and solar energy collector, coumarin derivatives have been widely applied. This thesis is consisted of two parts. The first part includes synthesis and characterization of coumarin derivatives and microencapsulated coumarin dyes. Five 7-alkyloxy-4-trifluomethylcoumarin fluorescent dyes were synthesized via Pechmann reaction and Williamson reaction. These compounds were characterized by FT-IR,1H-NMR,13C-NMR and MS. One of the coumarin compounds,7-propyloxy-4-trifluomethylcoumarin, was microencapsulated with the melamine-formaldehyde as shell material by an in situ polymerization. The microcapsules were characterized in terms of FT-IR, particle size distribution and SEM morphology. The cotton fabric dyed with the microencapsulated coumarin dyes shows strong fluorescence under 365nm UV light. In the second part of this paper, three novel coumarin-containing copolymers were synthesized and characterized. The important coumarin-containing monomer 3 was synthesized from acrylic acid and 7-hydroxycoumarin-3-ester, which was copolymerized with three other monomers respectively, including methyl methacrylate (MMA), butyl acrylate (BA) and vinyl acetate (VA). These coumarin containing copolymers were characterized by FT-IR, TG, GPC and their solubility and UV absorbance were studied.
