Cutters are important manufacturing resources for manufacturing enterprises, there are many kinds and large numbers of it. It has become a new task for the enterprises on how to reduce the processing cost for enterprises, improve the machining efficiency and manage the cutting tools in variety and different specifications effectively. According to the tools management needs of a mechanical manufacturing enterprise and combining the current research situation of the tool management at home and abroad, the paper puts forward that we should conduct the whole life-cycle visual management on cutters. Specific research content and the results are as follows:(1) Expounding relevant theoretical knowledge about the whole life-cycle of cutter management, and then the paper divide the life-cycle of cutter into plan, input, use and maintenance stages according to the cutter life-cycle of research.(2) After research and analysis on the current representative visualization technology such as Pro/E parameter design, VRML model and virtual visualization and realization principle which is based on the Silverlight technology, we choose Silverlight technology as our cutter management visualization technology.(3) We choose cutters classification method according to its own cutters resource structure features, and construct cutter information model based on the isomerous data according to the classification of cutter, and on this base, we puts forward GUID coding scheme which can solve the problem of heterogeneity produced by cutter system integration and globally unique logo.(4) After detailed analysis and contrast on the bar code technology, RFID and direct engraving technology, combined with cutter's itself characteristic of using, we finally choose laser engraving technology which is one kind of direct engraving as our cutter identification.(5) On the basis of different factors have different influence on tools matching choice, the paper put forward a kind of algorithm based on the information gain to build cutters matching module to complete cutter matching work. (6) Under the service frame structure of.Net Framework4.0and WCF, we complete the research and development of cutters'whole life-cycle visual management system on Visual Studio2010as development platform.
