In power system, with the development of control technology, increasing expansion of power system and the application of digital substation, the traditional synchronization methods and GPS Satellite Timing are not appropriate to the IED (Intelligent Electronic Devices), for they transmit the information by network communication system,so SNTP (Simple Network Time Protocol) are specified in IEC 61850 standard. However, accuracy of SNTP is too low to achieve T3 grade precision of IEC61850 standard.IEEE 1588 precision time synchronization protocol was proposed in 2002, provides a practical and feasible way to realize high precision time synchronization in certain fields with high accuracy and low cost. To solve the problem mentioned above, the paper introduces IEEE 1588 Precision Time Protocol into power system and realizes high performance time synchronization.In this paper, the PTP (Precision Time Protocol) technology defined in IEEE 1588 is analyzed in detail. The network topology and message classes of the PTP system are studied in a deep-going way, the synchronization mechanism of IEEE 1588 and the PTP clock models are expatiated. It is summarized for main factors of IEEE 1588 precision clock synchronization:Generate timestamps of PTP event message, transmission speed of PTP message, and application of boundary and transparent clocks.The Synchronization project based on IEEE 1588 was given at the same time. The scheme realizes hardware/software partition. The hardware design includes: Choice of CPU and PHY chip, entire scheme of hardware design, and make circuit board. The software design includes:Simplification of OpenTCP protocol, design of DP83640 driver, and receipt and transmission process of PTP message.In addition, the capability of the device is tested:receipt and transmission process of PTP message, time synchronization accuracy of the clock, ability of the time keeping and so on. By State Grid Electric Power Research Institute attestation, the experiment indicated that the clock offset between master and slave nodes is within the range of±300 nanoseconds, which can satisfy the requirements of power system.IEEE 1588 clock synchronization plan has many advantages, such as simple, high-accuracy, low-cost and so on. It is the ideal way to synchronize the clock. Our research based on practical engineering so easy to spread. The device of IEEE 1588 clock synchronization will come into the market soon.
