Gantry crane is a widely applied material handling device, its metal structure shows diversity and complexity. When designing portal- frame structure, designers have to encounter some statically indeterminate problems of spatial structure. Meanwhile, since gantry crane must be calculated in a number of conditions, it will certainly increase design calculation workload and extend design cycle if traditional manual method is applied. Finite element method is a widely used modern design analysis method in the field of structure design, and gantry crane structure tends to be analysed with ANSYS software. Therefore, it's significant to research model processing skill and key issues encountered in the process of gantry crane analysis, and hereby develop a software system called gantry crane structure parametric finite element analysis(FEA) system. This paper research above problems in following aspects:(1) On the basis of research about structure character and working character of gantry crane, combined with practical experience from previous FEA of gantry crane structure, some model processing technology in the process of modeling FEA model of gantry crane, such as unit type selecting, load calculation, working condition selection, is discussed.(2) On the basis of analysis about the influence of inertia moment of the main beam on bearing behavior, the influence of trolley track fixed by clamp plate and by welding on strength and stiffness of portal-frame structure is discussed by example; the influence of restriction condition on calculation is also researched; besides, a conclusion was drawn that the influence of reinforcing plate, at the junction of main beam and outrigger, on calculation can't be ignored and main beam flange overhang has little effect on calculation.(3) The key technology in modeling gantry crane FEA model using APDL is discussed; finally, a software system called "U-type gantry crane structure parametric finite element analysis system" is developed base on VB, using APDL.On the one hand the research contents and results of this thesis have great practical values for increasing similar gantry crane design efficiency, and on the other hand, it provides a valid reference for other similar parametric finite element analysis system development.
