The Research Of Boundary Flexibility On Enclosed Wall Landscape Design

Enclosed wall came from ancient city wall which was firstly existed as defensive structure, and then gradually it was looked as the structure and the frame of the country by the rulers. But after the industrial revolution, the former function of walls as the regional boundaries had disappeared, a large number of existed enclosed walls become the victims of the'enclosure movement'launched by the city developers. On the one hand, enclosed walls occupy a large part of the city limited lands, which causes the economy waste and traffic jams; on the other hand, people pay more and more attention on green environment and begin to pursue the outdoor public activity space. The wall is just between two different space boundaries, in the meantime, boundary is the place where the most frequent activities take place, while the designs on city borders are often neglected and in a passive position, all of these make the research for the enclosed wall boundary becoming necessary.In this thesis, the boundary was divided into two aspects which are "flexible boundary" and "rigid boundary". Given the reasons of the inherent Chinese traditional culture and social ideology, at present, enclosed walls will not be completely removed in China. To the exist enclosed wall which recently will not be dismantled,the thesis puts forward the way of rigid boundary to flexible processing design technique, based on classical gardens flexible design gimmick and modern border space design gimmick. And for new and removed wall area which land property doesn't change, the thesis advices to use the flexible border design gimmick, which takes the landscape boundary and people place as theoretical guidance, through the research of landscape elements such as plant, water, terrain difference and outdoor leisure activity space design to achieve the boundary flexibility design pattern.This thesis aims to put forward boundary flexible design pattern, on visible enclosed wall boundary using rigid boundary flexible design pattern, on invisible boundary using the flexible boundary design patterns. The research takes landscape boundary which is a part of ecology landscape and people place as theoretical guidance, through researching on Chinese classical garden space technique and modern space analysis ways, proposed the flexible boundary design pattern and rigid boundary flexibly design pattern, and both of patterns were carefully researched, finally from examples to demonstrate these two patterns respectively.
