American designer Steven Holl has applied phenomenology to architectural design, c onstructed "architecture phenomenology" theoretical approach, created "rational space" wh ich is beyond "space consciousness". this approach is a method studying the relationship be tween people and environment. And it also shares a common theoretical perspective with Chinese classical gardens construction. Therefore,common features shown by suzhou gard en and Steven holl as a starting point, referring to the methods of Steven holl’s reviewing s uzhou gardens, eventually applied this to modern garden design.This study is based on the idea of Steven Holl and Suzhou classical garden, brings forwards identical point across the era of the "phenomenology" and "nature-human integration". Secondly, this article explores the basic concept of phenomenology creation, spatial expression, materials usage and similar point between Suzhou classical gardens and Steven Holl "architecture phenomenology". Thirdly, this article uses Steven Holl theory to analyze the phenomenon of Suzhou classical gardens "spirit of place", which consists of three areas: place phenomenon, place structure, location atmosphere. Finally, it explains garden design theoretic and practical Implications of "spirit of place".Through the comparision between the theory and practice, this article has summed up: Holl’s architectural theory and classical Chinese garden, two ideas from different eras, both have a perception of human existence and experience of common concern, which is a starting point to sort out and analyze. This correlation study is to re-examine the relationship betweenchian traditional creat view and modern construct culture, and rethink profoundly essence. It brings an important reference for contemporary garden creation. It is also an important work of strengthening the comparison of traditional gardening culture, and developing and carrying forward Chinese traditional culture.
