With the increasing in speed of urbanization in China, large numbers of public spaces have been constructed in recent years to satisfy the need of citizens. The pedestrian streets and public squares constructed not only bring convenience for people but also increase social and environmental problems. To solve these problems, in the early 90"s American urban planner Peter Calthorpe developed the concept of Transit Oriented Development (TOD), an idea that now is the foundation of many national policies and planning practices. Nowadays lots of movements helping to transform planning and development in China have been launched. However, there is little research on public space design in accordance with TOD strategy. In aim to help the TOD implementation, this thesis analyses the characteristic of public spaces in TOD projects and concludes the public space design principles and methods. There are four parts in this thesis. In Part A. we introduce the concept and the history of urban public space in both western countries and China. Part B analyses the theoretical sources of TOD such as the concept of neighbourhood unit, grid street plan dated back to Thomas Jefferson, finally concludes with the features of public spaces in TOD. In the Part C we discuss both macro and micro aspect of public space design in accordance with concept of TOD. Finally in Part D we illustrate the application of the above theories with a project in Kunshan YangCheng Lake station area.
