As a trace left by the historical development of a city historic district has its own unique charm and vitality. Either the he building blocks, nor a street or a historic space environment, is an important material which recorded the historical information during the development of a city. It is an important element in urban development with rich traditional cultures and historic features. It also helps people to looking for the memories of the city. Gradually, it becomes the source of unique urban culture and diversity. As an essential element in spatial structure of the environment constitutes, historic district reflects the unique charm of the city in many ways. It is a great treasure of a city with long history.However, under the rapid development of urban economy and the accelerating pace of urban construction, the city streets are changing, urban space environment also changes. Historical district cannot keep up with the pace of economy development. In addition, people lack protection conscious to the historic districts or have little inadequate understanding of them, the city's regulation is not enough, the historic district are facing destroyed and gradually disappearing.This paper focuses on the protection and improvement of historical district. It emphasizes the importance of protection and improvement through presenting Chengdu city regulation and the status of historic district. This paper summarizes new protection measures and improvement strategy for Citang Street according to three historical and cultural blocks from Chengdu. After site visit and combined with protection measures and improvement strategy, this paper proposes a design concept for Citang Street historic district.
