According to microwave radiation theory, in this paper, horizontal and vertical polarization radiation characteristics and radiation characteristics covered with ice of insulator contamination was mainly studied under working condition.Characteristic of insulator pollution's plane wave was analyzed and concept of plane wave's polarization was elaborated. Theoretically proved that the horizontally polarized waves and vertically polarized waves, which are the two components of linear polarized wave, are independent of each other.Insulator contamination was tested by the 8mm microwave radiometer, which have horizontal polarization word and vertical polarization work, under clear sky weather condition. The paper researches the effects of both the equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD) and non-soluble deposit density (NSDD) on the antenna temperature ( T_A ) of contaminated XP-70 insulator, the experience formula of T_A is proposed. The results show that both ESDD and NSDD have influence on the T_A of the contaminated insulators, and the relationship between T_A and ESDD is the same as that between T_A and NSDD by a power function. Both ESDD and NSDD are mutually independent as for the influence on T_A . The experience formula of T_A was verified accurate by the least-squares procedure and Table Curve4.0 program. An ESDD and NSDD forecasting model based on Back Propagation (BP)neural network is put forward for predicting the pollution degree of the insulator. It shows that the BP neural network model has achieved good predicting performance. Finally, the four measurement model of insulator under icing state was established and the radiation characteristic of ice covered insulator was researched.
