The application of 8mm microwave radiometer on insulator contamination detection was mainly studied in this paper. Using the layered-media model, the 8mm wave radiation characteristic of insulator contamination was analyzed firstly. On this basis, an test method and equipment suitable for insulator contamination detection was designed and made. The artificial tests of contaminated XP-70 insulators were taken under the clear sky condition with the radiometer. The relation between the brightness temperature between ESDD and NSDD, which was verified by the software Table Curve3D, was obtained under both dry and moist conditions by fitting the data with the least square method. At last, the influence of high voltage and the relation between artificial contamination tests and natural contamination tests is studied.
