According to microwave radiation theory, in this paper, the microwave radiation measurement method of insulator contamination was mainly studied under working condition. The paper researches on the effects of both the equivalent salt deposit density (ESDD) and non-soluble deposit density (NSDD) on the antenna temperature (TA) of contaminated XP-70 insulators under clear sky and cloud whether conditions, the experience formula of TA is proposed. The results show that both the ESDD and NSDD have influence on the TA of the contaminated insulators, and the relationship between TA and ESDD is the same as that between TA and NSDD by a power function through curve fitting. Both ESDD and NSDD are mutually independent as for the influence on TA. The experience formula of TA was verified accurate by the least-squares procedure and Table Curve4.0 program.Based on the long-term tests results, the effects of both the ambient temperature and air humility on the microwave radiation characteristic of contaminated insulators were analyzed. The ambient temperature is the biggest influenced factor of TA by gray relational analysis. The correspondence between medium emission rate and air humidity was obtained when ambient temperature and sky temperature were removed in order to study on the impact of the air humidity on microwave radiation of contaminated insulators. The results show that the correspondence between medium emission rate and air humidity is better than that between TA and air humidity. Finally, an ESDD and NSDD forecasting model based on a radial basis function (RBF) neural network is put forward for predicting the pollution degree of the insulator. It shows that the RBF network model has achieved good predicting performance.
