With continuous development of society and economy, the requirement for high power quality is increasing, and with large consumption of global resources, the shortage of traditional energy has become increasingly prominent, smart grid is put forward in this context. As the hub of energy transfer network, substation intelligence is of great significance. This paper selected smart substation as the study object, analyzed the guiding role of the standard IEC 61850 in the study of smart substation communication network; proposed two-tier architecture system of smart substation consisting of equipment level and system level; explored the substation bus, Ethernet and network clock synchronization; combined with the important role of real-time and reliability in the study of communication network system of smart substation, studied the method to improve real-time of Ethernet, and proposed a method to improve network reliability by using network redundancy. The reliability of network redundancy is analyzed and calculated. Finally, the network security of smart substation are discussed, including the main security threats and the corresponding network security technology.
