With the urban development and urbanization, the demand of transportation and the number of private cars increase rapidly, and results in social problems traffic congestion, air pollution, noise pollution. At the same time, the service level for public transportion is expected much high. In order to solve those problems, it is very important to develop public transportion, catering to travel demand and is basis of sustainable development of "green" transportion. Modern tram is a kind of green public transport route, with characteristics of large-capacity, comfortable, low energy consumption, less pollution and so on. Its applicability in the city traffic is discussed and analyzed in this paper. Main contents and conclusions are as follows:First of all, the modern tram system is defined and it belongs to a class of low technical level among the modern light rail system. its characteristics such as large-capacity, less pollution, and low cost are analyzed. To a certain extent, it can ease traffic congestion, and reduce air pollution and noise pollution. It is put in that a modern tram system can be able to adapt to urban transport sustainable development.Secondly, the modern tram is compared with other large-capacity public transportion, mainly including subway, light rail, BRT, their difference are analyzed from transport capacity, speed, energy consumption, and economy. It is considered to be a powerful competitiveness, in line with "green" transport principle, to a certain extent, and should be added to the promotion and use of transportation.Thirdly, by analyzing the application of modern streetcar technology, including vehicle technology, circuit requirements, signal control, lane layout, site layout and the track layout, etc. the application of modern tram is summarized. As a transit of large-capacity and relatively low investment, Modern tram are more suitable in non-trunk of megacities and big cities, and the trunk of medium-sized cities.Finally, by drawing on the example of modern trolley Zhangjiang, economic, ecological and social benefits are further analyzed, which the development of modern trams can bring. Its use can not only save energy, reduce environmental pollution, but also can save travel time, its comfort can reduce the fatigue to improve labor productivity.This thesis research can provide reference and theoretical basis for urban transportation decision-makers.
