| At present, China is in the rush hour of urbanization, and a large number of population from rural area flooded into cities. To solve the problem of urban space, the outward expansion of city edge speeded up sharply. Though new construction land of suburbs could contain more exotic population and make it possible to transfer downtown residents outside, it also caused a widespread urban sprawl. Urban sprawl not only occupied a lot of farmland and natural green land, but also brought new urban problems such as traffic jams, environmental pollution and resource waste because of the thoughtless of land-use planning. In order to solve the problems brought by the rapid irrational urbanization and realize the sustainable development of the city, compact city theory arised. Its "decentralization concentration" mode could be used as an application of urban planning in China. Through literature review, analysis and study of the related content of compact city and urban sprawl, this paper has made a summary of the compact city hypothesis and made an analysis of the successful application examples. At last, take Beijing as an example, I focus on its urban problems caused by reckless expansion and point out some concrete proposals for its sustainable development based on the theoretical study and practical analysis:First, the making-pie expansion of central city area should be contained and put more attention on the construction of new towns to form sub-centers. Second, the construction of new towns must follow the principles that self-sufficiency, moderately compact, mixed land use and public transport and pedestrians preferred. |
