The study on the historical district can be described as both an old and new issue. To properly handle the valuable historic relics can be really challenging. There are many famous historical and cultural cities in China. Being the cultural district with historical relics, historical district is an important part of the city. We have made a significant progress on the study of historical district, however, we still have much to do on the integrity and richness of the system, especially on the landscape transformation. Therefore, how to conduct a thorough and sustainable protection and renewal, maintain the cultural characteristics and achieve the landscape renaissance, is worth our attention.Wu Liangyong concluded in the "Old Beijing City and Chrysanthemum Hutong" that the renewal of historical districts should include the following aspects:protection, renovation and reconstruction, redevelopment. In this paper, the concept of renaissance is to conduct organic renewal on the basis of protection. The renovation of landscape of the historical districts should in line with the original layout and the context. Take positive measures to improve the quality of traditional architecture in the historical neighborhoods, the basic living facilities and create a beautiful landscape to form a pleasing living environment for inhabitants and a vigorous block.Starting from the concept definition of historical districts and landscape in historical districts, followed by the development of theory of protection and renaissance of historical districts, this paper clarified the meaning and emphases of the protection of historical districts and presented the key concept: landscape renaissance of historical districts. With the study of the domestic an international research on the status of historical districts and two examples-Xin Tiandi in Shanghai and Fuzi Temple in Nanjing, this paper explores the practical meaning of the protection and renewal of historical districts and how to conduct an effective transformation on historical landscape in order to regain vigor in historical districts and fulfill the need of modern people. In the end, this paper put forward the principle and key point of landscape renaissance of historical districts.
