Since the reform and opening polices were introduced ,especially in the recent 10 years, and as the Strategy of Developing the Western Regions is steadily pushed forward, the arid and semi-arid areas zones in western of China have developed rapidly, which has promoted the small town construction into a period of rapid growth. However various problems have aroused in front of us, in particularly on the construction of landscape architecture such as the destroy of natural landscape, the degeneration of ecological environment, the neglect of local culture and characteristics and the higher construction standard making the local dwellers lost their traditional way of life. The reasons of this phenomenon are not only because the limitation of the region environment, but also the defects and shortcoming on the study of arid and semi-arid areas small towns` landscape design.Through the field investigation, the paper focuses on the landscape design of small towns` natural and man-made landscape, melting the theory of sustainable development in landscape ecology, towards the universal problems appeared in landscape design of arid and semi-arid areas towns` construction. The contents of the paper include the discussion of how to safeguard the unity and continuity of landscape with reasonably combing the natural environment, utilizing the elements of natural landscape to create ecological small town landscape, exploring the historical origins and continuing the small towns` origin of faith in humanity, analyzing the style of architecture in small towns to construct the special patterns of rhythm and rhyme of towns, portraying well ecological images of small towns to organic integrate the natural landscape and cultural origins in the landscape design of small towns at the same time broadly constructing better and sustainable small towns` landscape. And the set of detailed rules for implementation will be stated in this paper.As accelerating the process of urbanization in China, more problems will emerge. The constructions of small towns in arid and semi-arid areas of China are restricted by the geographical environment and other circumstance factors, which will be more complicated, and new discussions will continue. This paper analyzes particularly some typical problems in small towns` landscape planning, which are calling for immediate solution, to draw the focus of constructors and users, as a reference for the design and research later on.
