Studies Of French Architect Paul Muller In Modern Tianjin

French architect Paul·Muller (Paul Müller) ,who was active in French concession of Tianjin, China in modern times, is a celebrated architect. He graduated from Paris Art College (école des Beaux-Arts), getting an architect certificate (architecte dipl?mépar le gouvernement). He came to China in twenties of 20th century, and left in forties. During this period, Muller was not only an engineer of Engineering Department of Public Discussion Office of French concession, but also the main architect of Brossard & Mopin Architectural company, as well as an professor of Architecture in Tianjin College of Industry and Commerce (Institut des Hautes Etudes et Commerciales).Paul·Muller designed a great many excellent projects. Most of these buildings locate in French concession of Tianjin, and some lie in the city of Beijing, Shanghai and Shenyang. Some famous buildings of them, such as Quan Ye Department Store, Main Building of Formal College of Industry and Commerce, Bo Hai Building, Leopold Building, have been protected historical objects in Tianjin and important cases in Modern Chinese Architectural History.This article reproduces architectural life of Paul Muller from his architectural education experience and work experience, and represents his works by creating background of age and location as well on the spot research of every projects. Finally, do some preliminary studies of character and position of his works by combination of the two aspects. Through this study, I found that the architectural creation of Muller contains the impact of France traditional architecture, architectural education of inécole des Beaux-Arts and the evolution of world architectural thought trends.
