A Study On Form Transformation And Space Analysis Of Tianjin Former French Concession

Former French Concession in Tianjin is one of the existing well-protected concessions. In the modern city of Tianjin, it is only secondary to the British concession, including five important historical and cultural protection areas such as history and culture of protected areas in Quanyechang, Central garden, Chifeng Road, Chengde Road and Jiefangbei Road. They are not only an important part of this modern city, but also the creator of memory. But with urban development, urban construction is greatly accelerated. And the former French Concession located in the central business district of Tianjin is also facing a lot of transformation and renewal. So it is extremely urgent that we raise concrete and effective measures for the protection and update of the former Concession. Relevant historical data and spatial patterns in these areas are the main basis for the development of these measures and also the important guarantee to protect the overall style. But reviewing previous academic research in the area, there are less analysis combining with the historical development and expansion of the French Concession, resulting in less reference for the protection and updating of the region.The paper is part of the Tianjin Application Foundation and Cutting Edge Technology Research Planning——(Contract No.09 JCYBJC27000). From the historical background of concessions of the nine countries in Tianjin, we start a detailed interpretation of the background of establishing the former French Concession in Tianjin and its history of growth and expansion, and then from a historical, social and planning level we analyze the details of formation and development of the French Concession. Also, focusing on the evolution of the concession morphology and spatial development, comparing with the French and Chinese traditional urban form, we analyze the road network, neighborhood, street level space and space nodes respectively. Then respectively, following the further analysis of formation of the modern commercial, financial, squares, residential space, we obtain quantitative result of different types of space. Finally, according to the conclusions of the evolution of morphology and spatial analysis, we provide recommendations on the protection and renewal of the concession.
